Shanghai has an array
of Markets for shopping and spending hours browsing around, these are some of
the more popular Markets used by Foreigners and Locals - it is impossible to list
all of the markets in Shanghai and so we have chosen the preferred ones: Bird
Markets There
are four in Shanghai: Mei
Yuan Bird Market - Lane 49 Pudong Da Dao, Pudong - Tel: 6876 6638 Jinyang Bird
Market - 621 Jian Shan Road, Minhang - Tel: 6452 6705 Jin You Bird Market -
119 Jiang Pu Road/Ben Xin Road - Tel: 6501 1390 Jiang Yin Bird Market - 18-28
Huang Jie Que Road - Tel: 6327 3603 Haggling is accepted at all of these outlets! Shanxi
Lu/Mao Ming Lu Flower Market Another
huge flower market to find anything 'Flowery', potted plants and a wide selection
of Bonzai Trees. Haggling is accepted here! Silk
Market Sat
in the heart of Dong Jia Du Lu, this market is best reached by getting a taxi
as finding it on foot is not easy and it's quite a hike. A wide array of silks,
some better quality than others but bargain silk scarves and shawls to be found
here. Haggling encouraged! Xiang
Yang Lu Clothes Market As
centrally located as you could wish for, please allow at least 3 hours to tour
this market! Has toilets, refreshments and people offering you VCDs/DVDs for sale
on almost every corner. This markets sits on the corner of Huai Hai Zhong Lu and
Xiang Yang Nan Lu. The
clothes on offer here are amazingly cheap, but please do not just accept the first
offer, haggle away to your hearts' content here. Some people say a better bargain
is had in the early evening as the vendors are prepared to haggle and get lower
prices. For anything you can imagine, this place is a Must-See in Shanghai. Zhonghua
Market Found
at 100 Heng Feng Lu, Zhonghua Market offers lots of weird and wonderful bits of
craftwork, antiques, sculptures, chopsticks and anything sellable really! Fish
Market Situated
on Huang Pi Nan Lu, not too far from the Flower and Bird market.
This place has oodles of fish for topping up your fish tank or
for your pond if you have one. But we advise you to be a little selective and
buy fish in small quantities here initially until you find a reliable vendor as
some of the outlets sell fish that carry diseases and die within a few days of
getting them home - hence don't go here and stock up your new fish tank in one
go - they may all be dead within a week! Yuyuan
Market Although
not strictly a Market, Yu Gardens and the hive of activity around the entrance
to them has stalls and shops galore in which you can buy almost any Chinese historical
artefact copies, paintings, Chinese traditional clothes, chopsticks, teapots ....
the list is endless. When visiting Yu Gardens which in their own right are worth
a visit, the shops/stalls around here are a must-see too for some great momentoes
to take home. Pet
Market Situated
at 16 Cao San Dong Lu, this Pet Market offers all types of pets from cats and
dogs, to snakes and reptiles. Conditions here are not the best so if you don't
enjoy some animals being kept in cramped environments, don't visit this market. |
